What is the purpose of having a notch at the edge of a fire board next to the spot where you are "drilling?"

Is this notch absolutely necessary? Could you obtain hot embers without this notch?

    Remember the fire triangle?

Just as a triangle needs three sides to be a true triangle, a fire needs three things to be a fire.

You need Fuel, Heat & Oxygen to start a fire, or even a simple ember.

This notch supplies the oxygen to the heat & fuel. It also is the area where the hot dust collects together, forming the ember to start your fire.
